Basketball Dream
You don’t have to be a basketball fan, a Laker fan or even a Kobe Bryant fan to understand or appreciate the talent Kobe has. Bryant has been called “one of the greatest players in the history of our game” by NBA commissioner Adam Silver and The New York Times wrote that he has had “one of the most decorated careers in the history of the sport.” In 2008 and again in 2016, ESPN ranked him the second greatest shooting guard of all-time after Michael Jordan.
On Monday, December 18, 2017, Kobe’s jersey numbers 8 and 24 were retired and a ceremony was held in his honor at the Staples Center. In his speech, he impressed that the journey, not the destination is actually the dream. He said, “those times when you get up early and you work hard. Those times you stay up late and you work hard. Those times when you don’t feel like working. You’re too tired. You don’t want to push yourself, but you do it anyway…that is actually the dream.” That is such a meaningful and impactful description. It’s an important reminder that every thing we do to work hard towards a goal has an impact and if we could look at those moments of sacrifice, hard work, pain and dedication as the dream and not focus too much on a desired outcome, we would enjoy the process all the more. Every day we have a chance to decide where we devote our minutes and hours. The small decisions we make to support a goal add up over time—so don’t give up. Keep pressing on and try to enjoy the journey. It’s the only part of the process you’re guaranteed.
